For people who sleep through alarms

An alarm that gets you out of bed, and out the door.

Most alarms stop the moment you are awake enough to press something. This one stops when you are outside. By then, going back to bed is no longer the easy choice.

Your first 7 mornings are free. iPhone and Android.

Standing up is not enough

Alarms that make you solve a sum or photograph the sink get you up for a minute. Then the bed is right there, still warm.

UpandOut moves the finish line out of the bedroom. The alarm ends when you walk out of a zone around your home, so the only way to make it stop is to be dressed, through the door and down the street.

What a morning looks like

The alarm rings. You slide to start, and a few steps later it goes quiet while you get ready. You walk out, the map shows the distance left, and when you cross the line the morning is won and your streak grows.

Most people set a zone of 100 to 300 metres, a few minutes on foot. Short enough to do every day, long enough that you are properly outside.

Why outside, and not just up

Daylight soon after waking is the strongest signal your body clock gets. In a study of over 400,000 people, each extra hour of daylight went with easier getting up, less tiredness and better mood (Burns et al., Journal of Affective Disorders, 2021).

Questions

What if it is raining?

It still counts. The zone is the same in any weather. Bring a jacket.

Does it work with my phone locked?

Yes. On Android it takes over the screen until you are out. On iPhone, Apple does not let any app lock the screen, so leaving for another app brings the alarm straight back.

Does it need mobile data?

No. The alarm, the zone and the map around your home are on the phone, and GPS needs no connection.

Tomorrow morning, then.

Set the alarm tonight. The rest happens at the door.
